– For the second consecutive year, Moffitt Cancer Center
has been recognized as a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality” in the Healthcare Equality Index 2013 report, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization. Moffitt earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing adequate health care.
“Moffitt is committed to providing the best cancer care for all members of our community and continues to enhance care through research, such as its first study that examines cancer and cancer care among the LGBT community,” said B. Lee Green
, Ph.D., vice president of Moffitt Diversity
, senior member of Health Outcomes and Behavior
, and co-director of the Center for Equal Health
. “We know that cancer is colorblind, fluent in every language and can impact anyone. We strive to address cancer in all communities."
Of the 17 health care facilities in Florida named Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality, Moffitt is the only cancer center and one of only two health care facilities in the Tampa area. Facilities awarded this title meet several key indicators for equitable care, including non-discrimination policies for LGBT patients and employees, a guarantee of equal visitation for same-sex partners and parents, and LGBT health education for key staff members.
Moffitt’s employee network, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance at Moffitt (GLAAM), was instrumental in encouraging Moffitt’s leadership to complete the Healthcare Equality Index survey. GLAAM is involved in Moffitt’s commitment to provide LGBT patients and their families with exceptional cancer care.
“LGBT patients deeply appreciate the welcoming environment provided by a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality,” said Shane Snowdon, Human Rights Campaign Foundation health & aging director. “It makes a big difference to know that your local health care facility is fully committed to giving you the same care it gives your neighbors and co-workers.”
