Moffitt Cancer Center Hosts First-Ever Florida Health Equity Research Institute Summit

Who:               The new Florida Health Equity Research Institute

What:             The 2013 Florida Health Equity Research Institute Summit is the inaugural
gathering of more than 100 health disparities experts from academic and research institutions and community advocates from across the state. The goal is to promote and foster collaborative efforts to address
health disparities in Florida, especially in areas with limited health care resources.  

                       

Some of the topics that will be discussed during the event include:

·        Increasing research funding despite sequestration,

·        Collaborative ways to develop,adapt and implement evidence-based health innovations,

·        Developing sustainable partnerships and collaborations among our academic institutions and the community, and

·        Implementation of the Florida Health Disparities Research Agenda that addresses health promotion, health outcomes and the role of genetics in cancer.

 

“This Summit is the official launch of the state’s Health Equity Research Institute (HERI) which was recently approved by the Board of Governors.  It was created with the understanding that partnership with academic and research institutions, as well as the community,is necessary to identify and eliminate health disparities,” said B. Lee Green, Ph.D., vice president of Moffitt Diversity. “Through quality research and education, the HERI will be able to make an impact on the health of those in our state.”

During the summit,Florida Rep. Joseph “Joe” A. Gibbons (D) of Hallandale Beach will be honored for his role in the creation of the Florida Health Equity Research Institute.

Why:               Florida is one of the most diverse states in the United States. With this diversity,
there are populations with high incidence of disease burden, including those from ethnic/racial, rural, socioeconomically disadvantaged and other medically underserved backgrounds. The Health Equity Research Institute was created to better understand health disparities and develop approaches to promote health equality in the state. Institutions that are a part of the HERI include Bethune-Cookman University, Florida A&M University, Florida International University, Florida State University, Moffitt Cancer Center, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, University of Miami and University of South Florida.
