Moffitt Cancer Center To Hold Caring for the Caregiver Program April 18

Mar 17, 2009

Tampa, FL (March 17, 2009)-- A free education and support program for family cancer caregivers will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Vincent A. Stabile Research Building at Moffitt Cancer Center.

The program, open to anyone caring for a cancer patient, will be facilitated by Moffitt professionals Miriam Innocenti, clinical social worker; Jill Van Schaick, nurse practitioner; and Heather Bell, registered dietitian.

“A cancer diagnosis changes lives not only for cancer patients, but for those who love and care for them,” Innocenti said. “Caregivers must care about and care for themselves as much as they care for the patient. Their physical, emotional and spiritual well-being depends upon it.”

The Caring for the Caregiver program helps cancer caregivers understand how to manage side effects of treatment, what the role of nutrition is, how cancer affects the family and how to manage stress. They also learn problem-solving techniques and ways to improve communications skills and time management. Caregivers are encouraged to share their experiences during the program and learn from one another.

A light breakfast and lunch are provided. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. April 18. Reservations are required.
