Moffitt Cancer Center Physician To Be Honored With B.J. Kennedy Award

Mar 27, 2009

Tampa, FL (March 27, 2009) — Dr. Martine Extermann, associate member of  the Senior Adult Oncology Program at Moffitt Cancer Center and an associate professor at the University of South Florida, has been named one of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s 2009 Special Awards honorees.

ASCO is recognizing Extermann for her outstanding devotion to caring for older patients with cancer and for her major scientific contributions to the field of geriatric oncology.

“I am very honored by ASCO’s recognition,” Extermann said. “I had the honor of knowing Dr. Kennedy, and it is humbling to see my name associated with his. He was deeply convinced of the necessity of developing research for older cancer patients, and I look forward to pursuing in this endeavor.”

Extermann’s main interest is understanding how the general health of the older patient, which can vary considerably, interacts with the choice and the conduct of cancer treatment. Her work includes a grant-funded project to design a scoring system that would allow oncologists to better assess the risk of severe toxicity a patient may experience from chemotherapy. She’s also exploring the potential interactions between chemotherapy and the multiple medications that older patients take.

Extermann is president of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology and has served as chairwoman of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group’s Subcommittee on Aging.

The award will be presented at the society’s 45th annual meeting May 29 through June 3 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.
