Commitment

Where You Are:

Commitment to Life-Long Learning and to Education of Students, Residents and Other Physicians

It is the philosophy of this training program that Medical Oncology and Hematology subspecialty practitioners and consultants must have a strong background in the scientific basis of the subspecialty. Thus, all trainees must have substantive exposure to the methods and conduct of clinical and/or basic research and an understanding of the basic science principles related to cancer and hematology.

All fellows are required to carry out a mentored research project, beginning in their first year. This project will involve producing an actual clinical protocol, shepherding it through the scientific review and human subjects protection process, accruing patients, writing an abstract for submission for presentation at a national meeting, presentation at institutional seminars, College of Medicine Research Day and the Moffitt Cancer Center Fellow Research Symposium, and preparation of a first-author manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

This training should reinforce in all fellows the need for maintaining a life-long Commitment to updating their knowledge of basic pathophysiology of disease and recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances. All graduates of this training program, whether they enter academic, industry, or private practice positions, will have the background and should have the desire to foster advances in knowledge about diagnosis, prevention and treatment of neoplastic and hematologic disorders. All of our trainees should have a Commitment to participate in educating medical students, residents, fellows, practicing physicians, other health care professionals, and the lay public about hematologic and oncologic disorders and conducting and supporting clinical investigations.
