All of our trainees, whether eventually entering an academic career or private practice, will have obtained superb clinical knowledge, skills, and attitudes and excellence in all of the expected competencies for Hematologists and Medical Oncologists. This training program provides extensive supervised Clinical Training in the practice of the subspecialties of Medical Oncology and Hematology.
The clinical experience includes substantial outpatient responsibilities, Hematology and Medical Oncology subspecialty inpatient and consultation rotations, blood and marrow (hematopoietic cell) transplantation, and training in related areas such as transfusion medicine, hematopathology, radiation oncology, and hospice and palliative care. Moffitt Cancer Center is the primary Clinical Training site. Important parts of our training experience also are conducted at Tampa General Hospital, a large combined university and private practice hospital caring for a broad spectrum of socioeconomic groups of patients, with a strong commitment to indigent patient care, and James A. Haley Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
One of our rather unique strengths is a well-developed multidisciplinary geriatric oncology program, one of the first in the nation, with two faculty members who are internationally recognized leaders in the field of Geriatric Oncology.
The fellowship is designed to provide in-depth clinical knowledge and the highest level of professional competency in direct patient care and consultation in Medical Oncology and Hematology. Progressive responsibility and independence is granted to trainees, based on careful observation and evaluation by faculty members of the development of each trainees knowledge and patient care skills. The training program emphasizes the absolute necessity of maintaining the highest ethical standards, humanistic attitudes, and professionalism in interactions with patients and in working with the entire multidisciplinary physician and non-physician health care team
The training program and its Director will remain flexible to fit the educational and training opportunities to the needs of the trainees, as a group and individually.
