An endoscopic mucosal resection is a type of minimally invasive endoscopic procedure in which a large section of abnormal tissue is removed from a patient’s gastrointestinal tract. This procedure can be performed for early cancer of the esophagus, early cancer of the stomach or large precancerous lesions of the stomach, large precancerous lesions of the small bowel, and large precancerous polyps of the colon.

A small tube with a lighted camera known as an endoscope is inserted into the gastrointestinal tract through the mouth or anus, depending on the lesion being addressed. Once in place, the camera relays real-time images to the gastroenterologist, who uses small surgical tools through the scope to remove the abnormal tissue.

While an endoscopic mucosal resection is highly beneficial in that it can help certain individuals avoid major abdominal surgery, it is a complex procedure that requires a great amount of technical expertise. Because this procedure is considered an advanced procedure, few gastroenterologists have experience with this technique, so it’s crucial for patients to seek treatment at a high-volume cancer center such as Moffitt Cancer Center.

Although this procedure can be used in place of a surgery to attempt to cure the cancer in a minimally invasive way, additional therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, may be recommended after an endoscopic mucosal resection if the removed cells are confirmed to be cancerous and the cancer is not as early as originally thought. At Moffitt, we offer a comprehensive range of treatments in a single, convenient location, making it possible for our patients to receive surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and supportive care services without having to visit multiple providers. Additionally, our patients benefit from:

  • A team of surgical experts who specialize exclusively in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers
  • Complete individualized treatment plans, with recommendations made based on a number of patient-specific factors
  • Opportunities to access the newest techniques and treatments through our robust clinical trials program
