Excellence, Expertise & Compassionate Care
Patient care, research and education are all important parts of Moffitt Cancer Center’s Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Program. Patients can be confident that they will receive the most promising treatments possible. Moffitt’s designation by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center provides patients with the opportunity to be among the first to receive advanced therapies not yet available at other facilities in the state.
Under the direction of Mokenge Malafa, M.D., FACS, the GI Oncology team includes board-certified, fellowship-trained physician/scientists, who each have a high level of expertise in GI cancer. They also have dual appointments at Moffitt and the University of South Florida College of Medicine, one of the nation’s leading research universities.
If you or your family member has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, the GI Oncology Team at Moffitt is here to help. We offer a comprehensive program of diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials and support.
Moffitt’s Pancreatic Tumor Clinic is focused on the treatment and prevention of pancreatic cancers and associated cancers such as duodenal, bile duct and peri-ampullary cancers. Our interdisciplinary team approach to patient care means that a patient with a lesion in the pancreas, bile duct, duodenum or peri-ampullary region is seen by a team of specialists with expertise in the diagnosis and therapy of these tumors.
All of the clinical specialists (pancreatic surgeons, advanced endoscopists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists) needed to effectively manage patients with these tumors work together in the same space at the same time. Therefore, the patient has the opportunity to experience "one-stop shopping" such that they can see all the specialists that they need to see on the same day in the same clinic. The patient's care also benefits from the input of all the experts at all phases of their assessment and treatment. Outstanding support by oncology nurses, social workers and a dietitian round out the clinic experience. At Moffitt, we believe that each patient is unique. Our specialists study the unique characteristics of each patient and his or her illness in order to tailor-make the treatment.
