Kidney cancer (or renal cell cancer) is a broad category of cancers in which malignant (cancerous) cells form within a kidney, usually in the lining of small tubes within the organ. While the condition affects both men and women and can occur at any age, kidney cancer tends to be seen more frequently in men who are 45 and older.
There are two kidneys in the human body, located just above the waist on either side of the spine. Within each kidney are tiny tubes that function to filter waste products from the blood and produce urine. Malignant tumors that form within these tubes are known as renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and account for approximately 90 percent of all kidney cancer diagnoses.
