Gastrointestinal Carcinoid Tumor Treatment St Petersburg FL

A gastrointestinal (GI) carcinoid tumor is a type of cancer that can develop in the lining of the GI tract, part of the body’s digestive system. Normally, the GI tract helps the body digest foods and absorb nutrients before passing waste material out of the body. When a GI carcinoid tumor forms in the small intestine, stomach, colon or rectum, it affects the neuroendocrine cells, which help control digestive juices and the muscles that facilitate digestion.

Like all types of cancer, early detection is key when it comes to treatment. If found in the early stages while the disease is contained, this cancer is highly treatable. Cancer that has spread to nearby tissues, lymph nodes or other organs will require immediate treatment in an attempt to slow the progression of the disease. The difficulty with diagnosing gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors is that this condition is rare and does not always cause symptoms until the tumor is quite advanced. Often, the tumors are discovered unexpectedly during routine procedures.
