Esophageal Cancer Treatment Clearwater

Esophageal cancer is a cancer that develops in the esophagus, which is the muscular tube that runs from the mouth to the stomach. While the cancer typically begins in the cells of the inner lining of the esophagus, it can eventually progress to other layers of the esophagus, and even to other parts of the body.

Most cases of esophageal cancer are classified as either adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, although other rare forms have also been reported. It is important to note, however, that the cancer subtype is just one of many variables that should be taken into consideration during treatment.

At Moffitt Cancer Center, we take an individualized approach to diagnosing and treating esophageal cancer. In the Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology Program, we assess each patient on a case-by-case basis as a collective tumor board and recommend the treatments that have been associated with the highest survival rates and most substantial quality of life improvements in each specific situation. We also involve a number of skilled specialists in each patient’s care plan, thanks to our multispecialty staff of medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, endoscopic oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and supportive care providers.

Moffitt’s approach to esophageal cancer care provides several distinct advantages:

  • By managing each patient’s treatment as a cohesive team, we are able to ensure that a patient’s many treatment needs are being met. We’re also able to build a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient, integrating options such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and even cutting-edge alternatives such as molecular therapy and immune therapy treatments.
  •  By offering a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services under a single roof, we’re able to provide a streamlined patient experience. Patients don’t have to worry about traveling to multiple locations, transferring records or remembering which appointment is at which clinic. Most conveniently, no referral is necessary to come to Moffitt.
  • By offering suggestions based on the results of our clinical research, our fellowship-trained physicians and scientists are able to recommend the latest and most effective strategies for fighting esophageal cancer. Our GI physicians hold dual appointments at Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of South Florida College of Medicine, one of the nation’s leading research universities. Because of our commitment to research, the National Cancer Institute has named us a Comprehensive Cancer Center – the only one in Florida.
  • By hosting an extensive range of clinical trials, we’re able to offer patients access to novel treatments and technologies that aren’t yet available at other facilities.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, contact us by calling 1-888-MOFFITT. No referral is required to meet with our Esophageal Tumor Team; simply submit a request for a new patient appointment.
