Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery

Moffitt has expanded its surgery services to include transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM). Some of the benefits for patients of TEM include decreased pain, more precise excision and decreased hospital stay and recovery time. Radical rectal surgery to remove tumors usually involves an incision in the abdomen and a hospital stay of about one week. With TEM, patients generally go home the same day as the procedure. TEM incorporates an operating microscope for viewing and specialized surgical instruments to perform the surgery through the anus. The greatest benefit of TEM is that a patient can avoid open surgery and experience less pain and time recovering from surgery. The technique is most often used for large rectal polyps and early rectal cancers.

Clinical Trials

The GI Tumor Program supports landmark research in drug discovery, surgery, molecular therapy, immune therapy, endoscopy, risk assessment and detection. Breakthrough discoveries in the lab become early stage translational research studies and then patient clinical trials. Moffitt is known for its cutting-edge research in personalized medicine, which designs targeted treatments that improve patient outcomes, reduce side effects and prevent disease recurrence.
