Women Helping Women Defeat Cancer

The Moffitt Merit Society is an exciting women-in-leadership and philanthropy group of Moffitt Cancer Center to support and advocate for the prevention, treatment, research and education related to women’s cancers.

The group will galvanize women across Florida to raise awareness and funds so that no mother, daughter, sister or friend loses her life to cancer. One way is by supporting The Center for Women’s Oncology  at Moffitt.

In addition, the Moffitt Merit Society will stand with Moffitt’s stellar female scientists and physicians in their quest to prevent and cure cancer.

Moffitt is home to more than 80 such cancer professionals who stand on the shoulders of generations of women who paved the way for them. In fact, we decided to name our group after the first known woman in medicine.

We discovered that honor belonged to an ancient Egyptian woman named Merit Ptah. We thought it was particularly fitting that her name, Merit, describes the impact of women at Moffitt who are pioneers in their own right in the fight against cancer.

Finally, we are also looking down the road to the next generation of women who also merit support as they pursue cancer research. The Moffitt Merit Society will help encourage their education and careers, too.

A Message from Karen Arnold, Chair of the Moffitt Merit Society

I am proud to be a founding member of the Moffitt Merit Society. To have the opportunity to support the women researchers and physicians at Moffitt Cancer Center and further their ability to "Find a Cure" is very rewarding. I'm thrilled that news is spreading quickly about this opportunity to support and advocate for the prevention, treatment, research and education related to women’s cancers.

There’s nothing more exciting than a group of women who are determined to roll up their sleeves and make something good happen. Cancer is a formidable foe without a doubt. But Moffitt Cancer Center has the talent, expertise and determination to give women (and all patients) the best care imaginable.

I hope you will join the Moffitt Merit Society and encourage the women you know to do the same. It’s something we can all do to end cancer and the suffering it causes. Thank you.
