History
The Moffitt Merit Society® carries on the legacy of Merit Ptah, the first known woman in medicine nearly 5,000 years ago. The skills, achievements and compassionate care of female physicians and scientists at Moffitt reflect a deep commitment to providing hope and improving quality of life for those touched by cancer.

One in three women will experience cancer in her lifetime. Merit Society members stand beside them and partner with Moffitt physicians, researchers and staff to ensure that our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends will have access to the most advanced research-based treatments. Combined, our individual passion, expertise and philanthropy make us much more powerful in the fight against cancer.

Coffee Talks
These educational and networking opportunities allow members to hear from Moffitt experts about specific research initiatives, introduce guests to the Merit Society and at the end of the year, vote on which projects to support.

In 2011, the Merit Society invested $10,000 in Dr. Patricia Judson’s study to determine whether a food supplement can improve survival rates and quality of life for women with ovarian cancer. The study, published in the International Journal of Gynecologic Cancer, shows that fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE) is effective in killing a wide range of ovarian cancer cells while simultaneously enhancing the cancer-fighting qualities of certain chemotherapy treatments. Read the full story. These results will serve as the foundation for a world-first clinical trial, a stepping stone to personalized medicine using natural products.

In 2012, the Merit Society invested $10,000 in Dr. Nagi Kumar's study to determine whether nutritional supplements will reverse the effects of "chemo-brain" in cancer patients. The ultimate goal is to provide therapeutic and lifestyle interventions with the potential to alleviate or lessen the side effects of cancer treatment and improve quality of life for cancer survivors. Since Dr. Kumar was awarded Merit Society funds, her research has received both local and national attention. Click here to view a local story that highlights her hard work.

At the 2013 Membership Luncheon, the Merit Society had some very special news to share. All three doctors who presented at the Coffee Talks throughout the year were awarded funds toward their respective research projects:
