TAMPA, Fla. – The 9th-annual PNC Bank Miles for Moffitt broke records for participation and donations during the May 10 event at the University of South Florida.
Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the race’s 7,500 participants, as well as 400 virtual runners who chose to participate from home, Miles for Moffitt raised more than $594,000. The record-setting amount will fund 11 research projects at Moffitt Cancer Center and will be awarded during the 2015 Scientific Symposium. Last year’s race hosted 6,000 people who raised $346,000.
This year, 357 teams participated, including top fundraising team the Blood Thinners. Moffitt President and CEO Alan List, M.D., was a member.
“The success of Miles for Moffitt is truly a community effort. The event reminds us all that everything we do, from our research to our treatment, is in support of our patients. Miles for Moffitt will help advance the treatment and cure of cancer right here in the Tampa Bay area,” explained List.
The Blood Thinners brought in $99,000 and were this year’s top fundraising team. The second place team was Too Inspired By What’s Transpired, whose members raised more than $55,000 in honor of Moffitt brain cancer patient Michelle DeJong. In third place was High Speed Techs, whose team consisted of Moffitt employees who raised $15,000.
Our three largest teams were AutoNation with 356 members, Too Inspired By What’s Transpired with 288 participants and Gerdau’s Steel Survivors with 222.
WTSP 10 News anchors Heather Van Nest and Reginald Roundtree hosted the event, and Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria helped kick off the 1-mile fun walk/run.
Since 2006, Miles for Moffitt has raised more than $2 million and funded 35 researchers and their cancer research programs at Moffitt, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida.

There is still time for supporters to contribute to this year’s record-setting fundraising efforts. The Miles for Moffitt Donation Page will be open for another two months. Next year’s Miles for Moffitt will celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary on Saturday, May 9.
