Neurofibromatosis Surgery
Although most people who are diagnosed with neurofibromatosis do not need surgery, some may wish to address neurofibromas that are particularly large or painful (as is sometimes the case for tumors that develop on nerve pathways). Surgery may also be recommended for patients who have optic nerve gliomas, schwannomas or malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors.
Performing neurofibromatosis surgery requires a significant amount of skill, especially when removing tumors that are located in the brain or near a nerve. Surgical precision is extremely important to ensure the preservation of a patient’s eyesight, hearing, nerve sensation and neurological function after treatment. A highly experienced surgeon can also improve cosmetic outcomes for tumors that form on the surface of the skin. That’s why, when considering surgery for neurofibromatosis, patients are often advised to work with a surgeon who specializes in treating these unique tumors.
At Moffitt Cancer Center, we have a highly experienced team of surgical oncologists who exclusively treat cancers of the brain and nervous system, including type 1 and type 2 neurofibromatosis and schwannomatosis. We also have other surgical oncologists who operate specifically on the:
- Eyes
- Ears
- Skin
This allows us to match each patient with a surgeon who is most capable of successfully removing their specific tumor. Because we are also focused on quality of life outcomes, we have a team of supportive care specialists who can provide any assistance that becomes necessary after surgery.
No referral is required to undergo neurofibromatosis surgery at Moffitt. To schedule a consultation with one of our expert oncologists, call 1-888-663-3488 or submit a new patient registration form online.
